“Bringing everyone together. That’s where the magic is.”

-Claude Cormier

Recently, we learned that the designer of Berczy Park, Claude Cormier, passed away at the age of 63 in St. Catherines, Ontario. As someone who has left an indelible impression in Old Town Toronto, we want to take this time to reflect on the history of Berczy Park and look to the future of Claude’s continuing impact on our community.

Claude launched his landscape design firm CCxA in 1993, which is responsible for dozens of stunning parks throughout Montreal and Toronto, including Sugar Beach and Love Park. Berczy Park, along with its iconic fountain, was unveiled in June 2017 after significant consultation with the Old Town Toronto neighbourhood. The rejuvenated space immediately became a hot spot for events, live music, and of course, dogs. Claude was inspired by the diversity of the Old Town Toronto community- office workers looking for a spot to have lunch, families pushing around strollers, students chatting on the grass- and wanted to create a space that brought all these folks together with a smile. While the city was initially skeptical about a dog-themed fountain, Claude and his team pushed to bring their whimsical vision to life- making a few small concessions by including two cats and two birds in the build. A popular Easter Egg amongst folks in the know is the cat sitting on the fountain isn’t looking up at the bone with the other dogs- but over at the two birds settled on a nearby structure.

Of the 27 dogs featured on the fountain, only one has an official name- Smiley, the golden retriever, named after a blind therapy dog who worked with the St. John’s Ambulance therapy group in Toronto. We wonder what names Old Town Toronto locals have given to the other 26 cast-iron pups (and two cats and birds) over the years!

From Claude, re: the building of Berczy Park

“We are embracing history, we are using history, we are activating history, we are using it not as a decoration but as an active part of the design, something alive and that can be worked out with today’s technology and the current know how of building city life.”

It was key for Claude to ensure that Berczy Park equally celebrated history, the children of Old Town Toronto/St. Lawrence Market, and our beloved neighbourhood dogs. With a rambling grassy space for kids and pooches to play, the iconic fountain as a centrepiece, and a comfortable, beautiful space which blended in with our historic community.

To the West, at Wellington and Spadina, Claude’s team is currently developing “Cat Park”, a promenade flanked by cast-iron cats. In Claude’s mind, “dogs to the east, and cats to the west” lent an affectionate nod to the longstanding friendly rivalry between Toronto’s East and West ends. We hope the CCxA team will sneak in a pup or two to act as ambassadors between the Old Town Toronto and King West neighbourhoods.

Claude’s mark on Old Town Toronto will continue to grow as CCxA recently began a new project at 100 Lombard Street. Lombard Park will be a multi-use pedestrian space and urban passage flanked by stunning murals and heritage buildings, with tree-covered benches for community members to relax and unwind. The park’s development is still in its early days, but you can follow the process and learn how to get involved here.

Since its installation in 2017, the Berczy Park Dog Fountain has represented the heart of the Old Town Toronto community. In the winter, the Friends of Berczy Park volunteer group knit the pups scarves every year to keep off the chill. At the beginning of the pandemic, the dogs were given custom masks to model responsible COVID safety practices. At the base of the fountain, the cast-iron good boys and girls show signs of wear on their noses and heads from the friendly pats of passersby. They’ve even been given a bubble bath– though please don’t add soap to the water, we promise we keep them nice and clean and the water at the base of the fountain is meant to be pup-friendly.

Next time you’re in the neighbourhood, take a moment to enjoy the fountain. We’re sure it’ll put a smile on your face, just as Claude intended.

Don’t you love that feeling when you’re out and about downtown maybe running errands or on your way to meet a friend, headphones cranked to the max, and an absolute banger of a song pops up on your playlist? Sometimes a song perfectly captures the mood you’re in. Or seems to magically intuit where you are, or what you were just thinking about. We want to help you make that magic moment happen when you’re visiting Old Town Toronto; so we’ve made you a mix tape. Check out our selections below and add our Spotify playlist to enjoy next time you’re in the hood.

Diamond Dogs, Artist: David Bowie

Where to listen: Honestly, you could listen to the entire Diamond Dogs album while strutting around Old Town Toronto in your tallest heels and tightest jeans and have an excellent time, but the eponymous song from Bowie’s 8th studio album is a delight to listen to on your next visit to the Berczy Park Dog Fountain.

Diamond Dogs not your speed? May we also recommend:

Dog Days are Over, Florence + the Machine

Werewolves of London, Warren Zevon

Dog Days of Summer, Steve Conte

Take on Me, Artist: a-ha

Where to listen: This Norwegian synth-pop hit from 1985 has one of the most iconic music videos of all time. It’s an energetic bop with an emotional charge that’s sure to pump you up on your way to your next Climber Conditioning or Interval Running class at Altitude Fitness- a studio that specializes in preparing you for your next adventure.

May we also recommend:

Under Pressure, Queen/David Bowie

Cherry Bomb, The Runaways

Running Up That Hill, Kate Bush

Take Me To Church, Artist: Hozier

Where to listen: Okay. Listen. This might be a bit on the nose, but the debut single from the (now) uber-famous singer-songwriter makes for beautifully-moody accompaniment as you appreciate the glow of the newly installed lights in St. James Cathedral. Yes, we know the song is a metaphor and not actually about going to church, but the soul and gospel infusion of this alt-rock tune hits hard whether secular or sacred.

May we also recommend:

Imagine, John Lennon

Dear Wormwood, The Oh Hellos

Hallelujah, Pentatonix

I Think I Like When it Rains, Artist: WILLIS

Where to listen: If you’re in a dreamy, romantic kind of mood there’s nothing quite like wandering around in a gentle rain with this bluesy WILLIS tune playing. Once you’re ready to dry off try popping into CC Lounge for their famous Toronto cocktail- a twist on a classic Old Fashioned.

May we also recommend:

Barstool, Gary Jules

Helplessness Blues, Fleet Foxes

Nothing’s Gunna hurt You Baby, Cigarettes After Sex

All Too Well (Taylor’s Version), Artist: Taylor Swift

Where to listen: If you haven’t heard the ten-minute, heartwrenching ballad that made the internet cancel Jake Gyllenhaal where have you been? This bittersweet but ultimately uplifting folk tune is best suited to accompany a meandering walk along Market Street and the Esplanade, maybe picking up some seasonal flowers for yourself at the St. Lawrence Farmer’s Market, then sitting down with a hot cocoa at Balzac’s to write in your journal.

May we also recommend:

Scarborough Fair/Canticle, Simon and Garfunkel

A Tiskit A Tasket, Ella Fitzgerald

These Boots Are Made For Walkin’, Nancy Sinatra

The Distance, Artist: Cake

Where to listen: If you’re working against a deadline this 90s alt-rock track by Cake is the perfect song to give you a jolt of adrenaline to get you there- especially if you pair it with a snug pair of noise-canceling headphones, a comfy nook, and a double-Americano over ice from Fahrenheit Coffee.

May we also recommend:

Cosmic Dancer, T. Rex

Where is My Mind?, Pixies

Eleanor Rigby, The Beatles

You’re probably familiar with the term “aesthetic” when used to describe a distinct art or design style, like “Mid-Century Modern,” “Rococo,” or “Baroque.” How about the indie aesthetic? Or soft girl? And what on earth is goblincore? Aesthetic Types are helpful descriptors of niche personal styles that incorporate fashion, design, and lifestyle preferences. Do you spend a lot of time playing video games and love rocking brightly dyed hair and graphic tees? You may be an e-girl. Do you carry a canvas tote wherever you go, have a Matcha addiction, and too much macrame? You could be a Boho Babe. As there are well over 800 aesthetic types, we couldn’t cover them all, but we’ve chosen three popular aesthetics to create perfect outings in Old Town Toronto.

SOFT GIRL

You may be a soft girl if…

Lana Del Ray was in your Spotify Wrapped playlist.

You watch The Notebook, Love Actually, and/or Clueless at least once a year.

Your wardrobe is stocked with cozy neutrals, pastels, and sweet little sundresses.

You may be a soft girl, but that doesn’t mean you’re soft. Start off your perfect Sunday with an invigorating Hips and Hamstrings drop-in at the Yoga Lounge for $25. After class, pop over to Versus Coffee and sip on an Iced Matcha Latte while filling out your Five-Minute-Journal or reading the latest Nicholas Sparks novel. The cafe’s airy, tranquil decor is the perfect backdrop to spend the afternoon dreaming up scenarios where you and the cutie who just ordered a cappuccino fall madly in love. If you do happen to hit it off with Cappuccino Cutie invite them out for a cocktail at The Reservoir Lounge– a cozy hideout with live jazz and blues five nights a week.

GOBLINCORE

Your aesthetic may be goblincore if…

You often find your pockets filled with nifty little rocks, bits of sea glass, or orphaned buttons.

You’re obsessed with David Bowie.

Your closet is filled with earth-toned hand-me-downs and thrifted pieces.

Goblincore is all about keeping cozy, appreciating nature, and honouring the feral goblin of chaos that lives in your heart. Let’s start your day by dropping just $5.50 for a world-famous apple cake and a regular coffee (black-two-sugar) from Mystic Muffin; a no-frills coffee counter at the corner of Jarvis and Richmond. Make your way to Wildlife Thrift Store as you unceremoniously shove the pastry in your mouth, peeking into the shop window of Kochi Gifts on the way to admire the display of comfy robes and shiny hostess gifts. Once you’ve downed your coffee and polished off the cake crumbs head into Wildlife for a nice long browse of their collection of overalls, button-downs, and miscellaneous tchotchkes. After you’ve secured your purchase of a haunted-looking porcelain figurine you don’t have space for, treat yourself to a loaded Falafel Wrap for $7.99 from Shawarma House. Exercise restraint and wait to eat your sandwich until you’ve reached St. James Park, where you can people-watch and make up names for the local squirrels.

DARK ACADEMIA

Your aesthetic may be Dark Academia if…

Your robust selection of loose-leaf tea is rivaled only by your antiquary (rare book) collection.

You wish it were autumn all year round.

Your fondness for tweed and thick woollen sweaters borders on obsession.

After you’ve donned your all-seasons tweed jacket and slipped into your comfiest Oxfords, you start your day by dropping by the St. Lawrence Library– the entrance to which is easy to miss for non-bibliophiles- to pick up your latest holds and check out the “What’s New” section. Once your vintage-leather messenger bag is full of fresh stories, it’s time to find a nice quiet spot to read. Black Canary Coffee is a cozy, intimate cafe on Sherbourne with a tempting selection of decadent specialty coffees. After finishing your Honey Oat Latte and putting a good dent into your book, you ring up a friend to meet you for a pint at C’est What. The cozy pub/brewery is the perfect place to jaw their ear off about your recent read while enjoying a classic English Special Bitter.

Which “perfect day” would you choose: Soft Girl, Goblin Core, or Dark Academia? The good news is you can try all three!

We’re going to paint a picture for you.

You’re sitting in an antique rocking chair. A steaming hot mug of tea clutched in your hands, the sleeves of your vintage sweater tugged up to your knuckles. You take a deep breath and the soft scent of Nemesia flowers fills you with calm. A timer chimes gently and you stand up, stretch, and walk across the soft woven carpet towards your kitchen. You open the oven and the smell of homemade roast chicken and rich mushroom soup fills the room. You sit down to dinner and pour a healthy glass of an Ontario pinot noir. Welcome to your fall fantasy; here’s how you’re going to get it in Old Town Toronto.

It’s no secret that Old Town Toronto is a food destination. In fact, it’s been that way since the 1800s! And what better way to celebrate our favourite port of call for food lovers all over than by putting on one of our favourite events, the Feast of St. Lawrence!

Happening on Friday August 12-13 and presented by us here at the Old Town Toronto BIA, Feast is a fantastic two-day celebration of the many amazing foods to be had in Old Town Toronto.

Mother’s Day is approaching soon and as hectic as city life can get these days, it’s always good to take a moment to think of that person in our life whose support is unmatched, whose love runs deep, and who is always there for us. They go by many names, but more often than not they prefer the title of Mom.

Now, it should be noted that the role of “Mom” is a state of mind and, much like the personality of “Dad”, is one that transcends gender and can include found families and friend groups as well. Where a dad sports cargo shorts and makes bad puns, the Mom sings an improvised song while pouring wine into a “Live, Laugh, Love” glass before expressing concern over your choice of wardrobe. If you’ve ever announced an ill-advised plan to a group of people and heard one of them let out a sigh followed by the statement “just don’t hurt yourself” or watched a play and there was someone really overdoing it on the support of one of the minor actors, then you have experienced a Mom in the wild. A Mom is caring, loudly supportive, protective, and, much like the Dad, thinks they’re way funnier than they actually are. And for those reasons and many more, we love them.

So to all the Moms out there, we salute you and this day is for you!

But we understand that it can often be hard to figure out what to do for Mother’s Day that does justice to the appreciation and love you have for them. So with that, we’ve provided some recommendations based on the type of Mom you may have!

The “Oh, You Have To Try This Dish” Mom

This is for the Moms out there who, whether it’s homemade or on a day out, love a good meal.

An absolute must is kicking things off with Brunch at Le Petit Dejeuner for some of their incredible Eggs Benny & Friends or some classic French Toast served with eggs and bacon. From there we suggest heading right to the food-lover’s heaven itself, the St. Lawrence Market. Grab a coffee from Everyday Gourmet Coffee Roasters and a Creme Brulee tart from Eve’s Temptations and enjoy both while letting the sights and smells of the Market inspire your Mom.

No experience of the Market is the same, so this is where the plan can be improvised a bit. A food-lover in St. Lawrence Market is like a kid in a candy store except it’s more of a candy market with over 120 individual candy stores to explore. That said, we suggest getting a truffle, a bottle of balsamic, or a fancy tin of caviar from Caviar Direct. Or you could pick up a jar of seasoning from Saha International Cuisine (we suggest the shish taouk Middle Eastern chicken marinade). Or you could buy ALL THE CHEESE at Chris’ Cheese-Mongers. This is the chance for your Mom to go hog wild and let their passion for culinary artistry inspire them.

Before you know it, it’s dinner time and you can declare it “Mom’s Choice” for where to go, confident that OTT has nearly any type of cuisine just a short walk away. We have sublime Italian (ARDO, Amano Trattoria, Biagio), Indian (Bindia Indian Bistro, Benares Cucina Indian, Bombay Palace), Japanese (Moegi Sushi, Aya260 Sushi), and pub style (P.J. O’Brien Irish Pub & Restaurant, Betty’s, Banknote Bar) to name just a few. You just can’t go wrong for a fine dining experience in the neighbourhood.

And finally we land on dessert and there’s no better way to indulge in a sweet tooth than with a lava cake from Melt ‘N Dip. Cake stuffed with hot chocolate and covered with Belgian chocolate served with a scoop of Italian Ice Cream is frankly the perfect way to end an epic day of food!

The “Oh My Goodness, I Love It!” Mom

This is the spot for Moms who aren’t terribly fussed about going out, but they’re a huge fan of incredible gifts with thought and love put into them.

Picking out a sweet Mother’s Day card from Toronto’s First Post Office is a great way to express how you feel about your dear Ma. You can start the day off simply with some fresh-baked bread from the George Street Diner’s Farrelly’s Famous Irish Soda Bread Mix which will be ready to bake in five minutes! Be sure to pair it with Farrelly’s Famous Traditional Irish Marmalade for a tasty combo. And the start of the day wouldn’t be complete without some fresh brewed coffee with beans from Fahrenheit Coffee!

If your Mom is a fan of jewellery, the folks at ATTIC will be able to help you find the perfect gift that is timeless, simple, attractive, and durable. From simple gold chains and charm necklaces to rings with sparkling sapphire, you just can’t miss with these excellent quality pieces.

And if your Mom appreciates a good book, you can scope out D & E Lake Ltd., one of Toronto’s largest rare book stores and see if your Mom’s favourite book or a selection from their favourite author is there. Additionally if you give them enough time they might even be able to find it for you if they don’t have it!

The “Can I Just Say That I’m Having a Wonderful Time” Mom

This is for the Mom who loves having experiences. From a spa day to a restaurant with comically-sized portions, having a special day devoted to your Mom is one that they will enjoy and talk about for years to come.

First up is to start the day with some yoga at BeHot Yoga, which is currently offering an introduction deal of five classes for $75. An early morning hot yoga session is the perfect way to get your body and mind ready for a day of pampering! We’re talking about the full treatment. A traditional Thai massage at Bahn Thai Spa, a mani/pedi at Nebula Nails & Spa, and ending with a new hair style from Curl Bar Beauty Salon or Qi Salon.

Next up is dinner and from there you have some options. For food that everyone can enjoy, The Old Spaghetti Factory and Gabby’s will have hearty portions and a fun atmosphere that your Mom will love. For an elegant night out, Motorino Citta, Mangia & Bevi, and Carisma all provide a divine dining experience with fantastic wines that you won’t soon forget.

To end the night we’d suggest some drinks at Brash & Sassy Vodka Lounge for a 1920’s-style cocktail and performances that include DJs and fire performers!

The “It’s Wine O’clock Somewhere In The World” Mom

Break out the Grigio, because this one is for the Moms who love unmatched experiences of food and leisure that pair well with a glass of wine present. This section is less about creating a full day around wine, but more some tips on where to go if you’d like a glass of something nice with your food.

Many of the places mentioned in the experiences above are unmatched with their wine selection. Cantina Mercatto has one of the finest selections in the city, and HOTHOUSE has 50% off bottles on Thursdays along with an extensive selection for takeout.

Additionally bottles can be found at The Wine Shop with special mixed cases that match all tastes and budgets! For something a little hard to find, you can grab a bottle of something special at GoodGood’s extensive cellar while finding a suitable snack to pair it with.

Well, the weather took its dear sweet time, but we’re finally getting some brighter days and we’re feeling the urge to go out and explore. And what better place to seek out adventure than our very own Old Town Toronto and its vast selection of businesses to suit literally any possible need?

We truly are blessed to have such a vibrant community of stores, restaurants, cafes, bars, and boutiques that call OTT home and we can’t help but celebrate whenever a new addition to our little piece of the city arrives to bring their own unique style and speciality to our streets!

So with that, here is another list of some new and notable businesses to watch out for this Spring. From good eats, and spa treatments to fashionable showstoppers and top-shelf live music, these Old Town spots are sure to please.

Mr. Cavaliere – mrcavaliere.com

Stylish design. Skilled craftsmanship. Quality service.

Mr. Cavaliere is more than a service that delivers custom menswear, their owner, Jonathan Cavaliere, started the business to spread the immeasurably good feeling that comes when you dress well for any occasion. Offering style consultations and fashion assessments along with either a made to order service that makes any alterations on request or a more personal made to measure service that results in a completely custom suit that stands the test of time, Mr. Cavaliere is in the business of creating a completely unique and personal experience with your comfort and style in mind. Book a consultation, fitting, or measuring in their OTT studio now and get an article of clothing that speaks to who you are and will last a lifetime.

The Ten Spot – 351 King St E unit 103a, thetenspot.com/king-street-east

We’ve long been fans of The Ten Spot and when they opened their King Street East location during the peak of the early pandemic, we were so excited to finally have this quality beauty bar destination right in our neighbourhood! With a jam-packed service menu that puts your busy schedule in mind while not skimping on the quality care, you can book a mani/pedi, facial, brow tint, thread, wax, laser, and spa treatments that include a lash lift and brow lam! You can go solo or with a group of your besties to make it a party! And with summer coming up, they offer waxing services that are second to none, including their signature Brazilian wax “The Brazilly”.

Bar Cathedral – 54 The Esplanade, barcathedral.ca

This little spot on the Esplanade originally used to be an overflow bar attached to the Old Spaghetti Factory for when the restaurant had busy nights, but in 2010 it turned into a wonderful music venue called the Amsterdam Bicycle Club. Known for its open mic nights, it was a great casual place to stop by. However when the pandemic hit the ABC (oh no, I just got that) was closed for good and the fate of live music in Toronto continued to be in question.

Thankfully though, as time passed and businesses began to open their doors once again, the space reopened as Bar Cathedral and underwent renovations to be the ultimate church of live music of the Esplanade. They even got a massive professional tech upgrade to ensure that the music being played is sounding clean and incredible! So stop by for open mic, comedy nights, or special musical guests for a night to remember!

Either way, CDS Flooring on Church Street has got your back with quality flooring services that include installation and selection.
Back in February The Esplanade got a little more…good. Doubly so, in fact!

GoodGood is a wonderful new sit-in cafe, wine bar, and one-stop-shop filled with delicious eats, scrumptious sweets, and divine sips, all with a delivery service that will see your order arrive in an hour!

You can grab a quick coffee to go, pick up some Comeback Snacks PB & J popcorn or Electric Jerky plant-based jerky for your daily munching needs, and even take advantage of a regular rotation of perks and promotions! In fact, until the end of March any purchase from their store comes with a free can of Daydream sparkling water and a bottle of Burlington-based Sung’s Korean Hot Sauce!
