Whether you’re looking for a cheeky pint after work or a Saturday night blow-out (drink responsibly), we’ve put together this list of five fantastic cocktails you can find here in Old Town Toronto. Try them out one at a time, or tie one on with an old-school bar crawl- just remember to take care of your DDs mocktails and meals.
CC Lounge + Whisky Bar
Located in the historic Beardmore building dating back to 1841, CC Lounge + Whisky Bar is all about old-school charm with a contemporary flair. They specialize in classic cocktails (think Don Draper) and Whisky Flights, with an impressive list of Canadian and Scottish spirits. Bourbon fans will also be thrilled by their extensive shelf from Wild Turkey to Blantons and beyond.
Featured cocktail: Toronto. $16. 2.5oz Gibson’s sterling, 1oz fernet branca, simple syrup, muddled oranges.
The Toronto is CC Lounge’s answer to the traditional Old Fashioned, a signature cocktail that’s boozy yet crushable (and maybe a little dangerous).
Score on King
Score on King is famous for one thing: their INSANE Caesar selection. And when we say Caesers, we really mean full meals which come with a Caesar on the side. Corn dogs, mac and cheese, and bacon-wrapped scallops are par for the course Caesar garnishes at Score- if you really want to be adventurous, try the Caesar Grande which includes two burgers, nachos, and a slice of cake. Or better yet, bring a friend (or a softball team) and try out the Checkmate Caesar.
Featured Cocktail: The Checkmate Caesar. $60. 500ml. 4 ounces.
The Checkmate Caesar includes hot wings, onion rings, a burger, a pulled pork mac ‘n’ cheese hot dog, a pulled pork slider, a brownie and an ENTIRE CORNISH GAME HEN.
C’est What
Cocktails are delicious- no doubt- but sometimes you just want a beer. C’est What is a classic gastro pub and brewery tucked underground on Front Street (but with a stellar next-door patio in the summer). C’est What has been serving perfect pints since the 60s, and they’ve got it locked down to a science. They specialize in English-style beers, and their ESB (English Special Bitter) is a comforting crowd-pleaser. After you’ve put away a couple of rounds, you can pick up cans from their on-site bottle shop. C’est What also offers beer flights, perfect for folks who want to try out their limited edition and seasonal draughts.
Le Papillon
Le Papillon is famous for their top-notch French cuisine, but don’t forget to ask about their classic cocktail specials, which rotate regularly and are full of European flair. If you’re more into wine, you can enjoy half-price bottles every Thursday with your meal.
Feature cocktail: Kir Royal. Cassis liquor and sparkling wine. $16, 3 oz.
The Kir Royal is a classic aperitif that’s refreshing, sophisticated, and the perfect beginning to a good meal.
Pravda Vodka Bar
This comfy after-work haunt transforms into a banging club venue on weekends, and their extensive cocktail list reflects both sensibilities. For the earlier crowd, Thirsty Thursdays happy hour from 5-7:30 pm includes $10 martinis and bites for $7-$10. For the more adventurous, bottle service starts at $225 and includes a massive menu of vodka (obviously), cognac, and more.
Feature cocktail: Lenin’s Black Bison. $16, 3oz.
Pravda’s signature martini is made with the iconic Zubrowka Polish Vodka, cassis, and just a hint of sass.
