World Cup Training, Right Here in Toronto at Altitude Athletic Training

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicking off in June, some teams are seeking to maximize their training efforts to gain a critical advantage over their opponents. This year’s tournament will have Canada hosting alongside Mexico and the United States, exposing teams to a diverse range of geographic and environmental conditions across the continent – including six games played here in Toronto.

In addition to temperature and humidity, teams will also be challenged by the increased elevation of some host city stadium venues. For instance, Guadalajara Stadium in Mexico is located at an altitude of 1550 meters (or 5100 feet) above sea level, while the Mexico City Stadium is situated at 2,200 meters (7,200 feet). At higher altitudes, the reduction in atmospheric pressure decreases the blood oxygen availability for athletes. As a result, players unacclimatized to the altitude are more likely to experience increased fatigue and slower recovery times in comparison to their performance at sea level.

To effectively prepare athletes for these conditions, the South Korean National Team (who are positioned to play their first two group stage matches in Guadalajara) have chosen to train at the University of Utah’s facilities ahead of the World Cup. Located roughly 1400 meters about sea level, the University camp selection is intended to help players adapt to the high-altitude conditions of their early games against Czechia and host-nation Mexico.

Hypoxic (or reduced oxygen) training has been recognized as conferring a physiological advantage particularly in aerobic sports and is a tactic that has commonly been used by distance runners, cyclists, and swimmers to improve their performance, including athletes competing at sea level.

Here at Altitude Athletic Training, we apply the same approach to make hypoxic training accessible to the public through our gym facility that simulates the reduced oxygen concentration present at an elevation of 10,000 feet. If you’re interested in experiencing altitude training for yourself, we welcome you to schedule a complimentary coach consult with our experienced team.
